Solutions to Potty Training Problems

Here are some solutions to your common potty training problems. We have heard just about every problem there is when it comes to potty training and we have the answers to quite a few of them. Here are three of the most common issues.

Potty Training Problem #1
My son keeps peeing on the floor when seated on the toilet to make #2.

Solutions to Potty Training Problem #1
We heard this problem so many times that we actually invented a solution. It is called the splash guard. Many of our potty seats now come equipped with a built in splash guard for little squirts. This shield prevents little tinklers from spraying pee over the seat when they are seated to make #2.

Potty Training Problem #2
My child refuses to use her potty chair no matter what we do. all of her siblings have used the same one with no problems.

Solutions to Potty Training Problem #2
She may never use the potty chair. We have seen this happen many times. Some children  want so much to be like their parents or older siblings that they refuse any “baby seats”. Buy her a cute step stool and try allowing her to sit on the regular toilet. This may give her the confidence she needs to go.

Potty Training Problem #3
My child seems interested in his potty seat but every time we put him on it he never goes.

Solutions to Potty Training Problem #3
Buy a potty hook and hang the seat there when not in use. Show your child how to put the seat over the toilet himself and explain that he can do this all by him self. Ask your child is he or she needs to go to the bathroom but rather than taking them yourself, simply say. “Go ahead, go get your potty seat”. This will really help your child to OWN his or her potty time.

Potty Training Solutions for Boys

I have two boys so I feel well qualified to offer potty training solutions for boys. We all know that boys and girls have different plumbing and thus have different needs for potty training. Here are some solutions that I have used quite successfully

Potty Seats vs Potty Chairs
Potty chairs just didn’t cut it for my boys. Boys like to “stand-n-spray” when they pee and a floor potty was just a recipe for disaster. My boys did not want to sit to pee either. Rather than have a floor potty chair for #2 and then take them to the big boy potty for #1 we decided it is just easier (and less disgusting) to use the big boy potty for everything. We did get a lot of use from an Elmo potty seat that fit over the regular toilet.

Step Stools
If you have a boy then you MUST buy a step stool. My boys loved using the stool to go pee-pee in the toilet. It made them feel like big boys and prevented a lot of messes. My oldest son still uses the step stool to brush his teeth.

Potty Training Accessories
I used a couple of potty training accessories with mixed results. We have a potty hook that is intended to hang the potty seat on the toilet tank. Just like everything else in my house, the kids never hung the potty seat back on the hook where it belongs. I eventually started using the potty hook to hang the potty seat on the back of the door where visitors didn’t have to see it. We had great successes with tinkle targets. They are flush-able designs that your boys can pee on. My kids love to aim their pee and this potty training solution helped them keep it in the toilet.

Thomas Potty Seat

Ginsey Insustries has a great Thomas potty seat. Technically, it is a Thomas the Train 3 in 1 potty training chair system. This system includes:

THOMAS FLOOR POTTY
This is a potty chair that starts the potty training process on your child’s level.

DETACHABLE THOMAS POTTY SEAT
This seat detaches from the base and is used on the big toilet. This welcomes your child to adult toilet (standard or elongated seats)

THOMAS STEP STOOL
This stool can be used once your child is ready to stand at the toilet (boys) or just to get on the toilet (girls). It provides a solid base for your child to reach both the potty and the sink.

THOMAS STICKERS
You can reward potty training progress and decorate your Thomas potty!

To commemorate our Thomas potty training seat I wrote a silly Ginsey version of the Thomas theme song:

They’re two they’re four they’re six they’re eight
It doesn’t matter cause they’re potty trained
Tan and green and brown and blue
Whatever the color of their poo

Potty train at home or when away
Our products help a’long the way
A place to seat little rear ends
Ginsey is your friend!

Potty Seats vs Potty Chairs

Should you purchase a potty seat or potty chair. This is bound to become a Mom’s (or Dad’s) debate for the ages. I am a father of two little boys and I definitely side with the potty seat crowd, but keeping in mind the fact that my kids are boys. Without getting into the obvious differences between the two sexes, I can say that my boys used the potty seat for making #2 but never used it for making pee pee. We instead opted for a small step stool that my boys can use to gain extra height. If you have little boys you already know that they love to stand up and pee. I think they love it a little too much considering how many times they have missed.

Potty Chairs
You already know that I am 100% behind using potty seats and step stools for potty training boys but what about potty chairs? Potty chairs are a great way to introduce any child to the toilet, but I think they are a much better option for little girls. Girls do not stand when they pee (obviously) so a step stool is only beneficial once a girl has learned to go into the bathroom, put down the seat that brother left up, mount the toilet and do her business. I think that in the beginning a potty char is the perfect height for a little girl. You may not want to clean poop out of a potty chair so you may want to make the decision that the potty chair id for making #1 and the big potty is for #2, as most kids need help for #2 in the beginning anyway.

I hope this small anecdotal article is helpful in distinguishing between buying a potty seat or a potty chair for boys and girls.

Using Potty Seats in Public

The Travel Potty Seat

There has recently been a lot of news about a mom in Utah who allowed her toddler to use a potty seat while sitting in a restaurant. We at Ginsey find this to be an improper use of a great product. Potty training is a very difficult step for most parents. Little ones usually do not have the ability to “hold-it”. That is probably why the mom in Utah took her potty training seat to the restaurant in the first place. This was a bold and kinda gross thing to do. We wish we know the name of the mom who did this so we could show her a great alternative to letting your toddler go #2 at the dinner table.

Ginsey makes a number of travel potty seats. These travel potty seats fold into a very compact unit that feats neatly and most importantly discreetly into your purse, diaper bag, or pocket. If the potty training mom in Utah has one of our travel seats she could easily have taken her child to the restroom, unfolded the travel seat and allowed her child to make #2 in a sanitary and private way.

Take our advise and use a travel potty seat from Ginsey Industries…and keep #2 something that is reserved for the bathroom only!

The Minnie Mouse potty seat is sure to provide a more comforting experience for any child that may feel uneasy about using a real toilet. Make teaching your little girl how to go to the bathroom exciting and new!

Elmo Air Cushioned Potty Seat

This Sesame Street Elmo Potty Seat is air cushioned and is slightly larger than our traditional soft potty training seats. I own this potty seat and have used it quite successfully while potty training my son Colin. He was a late starter to say the least and he is also pretty big for his age. The other potty seats we tried with him were simply too small and uncomfortable. This Elmo potty seat seemed to be a bit larger and allowed him to and do his business in much more comfort. Another benefit for older kids is that this potty seat does not feature a large “splash guard” but rather a smaller deflector. I know that many parents love the splash guard built into our other products but my son was a bit older and found it to be intrusive because of his larger size.

My wife really liked that that the top (blue portion) of the seat could be removed for easy cleaning. I am very pleased with this product and would recommend it to any potty training parent, especially those with older children.
